Specifically, motion picture films, that were produced prior to the 1940’s have nitrate base. Nitrate base films, when stored improperly, can become highly flammable. It is not recommended to store large quantities (5,000 feet or more) of nitrate based films together. Any film base that has the words “SAFETY” on it – is NOT nitrate and is not a fire hazard. If you have a large amount (5,000 feet or more) of film from prior to 1940 that may be nitrate, we recommend getting it digitized and investigating proper disposal options.
